No: a standard on-grid inverter must shut down when KSEB supply fails. Here is why, and what to plan if your home needs backup.

The short answer
No. A standard on-grid solar system shuts down when KSEB grid supply fails, even when sunlight is available and the panels could otherwise generate power.
This is a safety feature, not a defect. The Central Electricity Authority requires grid-connected PV inverters to detect islanding and stop supplying power when the grid is down. KSEB has also explained that on-grid generation operates only while grid power is present and switches off when supply is lost.
Why the inverter has to stop
During an outage, KSEB technicians may need to work on lines that are expected to be de-energised. If a rooftop system continued feeding electricity into the disconnected line, it could create a serious hazard. Anti-islanding protection prevents that unintended supply.
In a normal grid-connected setup:
- Solar panels produce DC electricity in daylight.
- The on-grid inverter synchronises its output with the utility grid.
- When grid voltage or frequency disappears, the inverter detects the outage.
- Anti-islanding protection stops the inverter from supplying the home or grid.
- The system resumes only after acceptable grid conditions return and its safety checks are complete.
Can the panels power my home while the grid is off?
Not through a standard on-grid inverter. Backup needs equipment and wiring designed to isolate selected home circuits from the utility grid.
A properly designed hybrid solar system can combine a compatible hybrid inverter, battery, changeover or backup interface, protection devices, and a separate critical-load circuit.
